It’s tough when you lose your friend. It’s tougher still when you feel like a newcomer is trying to push his memory right out of the house. But a heart can hold so much more than a little dog could imagine.

Excerpt From Jimmy: Toughest Times Ever

The sun hung low in the sky. As Jimmy and Stan walked, Stan’s long shadow fell on Jimmy. After another block, they reached the dog park. Stan opened the gate. He led Jimmy down the dirt path between the trees.
Dogs whizzed by. Swallows swooped to catch bugs. “I wish you were here with me, Arrow,” Jimmy thought. He felt a flutter in his heart.
For a moment, he felt as if Arrow was there with him.
Inside him.
He stood still, afraid to move. “Arrow! You’re still here! We’re still friends.”
Stan walked on. Jimmy’s legs began to move again.
The smells and sounds and sights of the park fell away. Arrow’s love and protection surrounded Jimmy, like the glow of the sun. All the joy they used to feel when they played together came back to him.
How Arrow used to tease him to start a game of chase.
How Arrow would growl at bigger dogs when they nosed Jimmy.
How Arrow would wait for him to catch up when he fell behind.
Jimmy saw a rabbit crouching low in tall grass. He paid no attention.
The sun touched the earth. Stan’s shadow grew even longer. Jimmy could feel Arrow moving away, slowly, but he didn’t feel sad.
“Arrow, we’re still together! For a while you disappeared. But now you’re inside me. I’m a cocoon. You’re metamorzing.”

It’s hard being a runt. Harder still if you’re missing one of your legs. Makes you pretty sure no family would adopt you. None of the other dogs in the shelter even wants to play with you. Makes you just want to put your head down, close your eyes, and give up. But Jimmy will find out that he can belong to a family and a pack of dogs and that even though life is really hard sometimes, life is good. Don’t ever give up.

Excerpt From Jimmy: Toughest Dog Ever:

He lay on the rock, panting. His whole body shook from the cold. His three good legs barely held him up as he limped toward the dog door. Slowly, he pushed himself through the flap. Warm air and the smell of Lola, Stan, and Arrow washed over him. He found the big round dog bed and collapsed in a shivering heap.
Lola came over. “Jimmy! You’re all wet — and you’re freezing! Stan! Jimmy fell in the pond!” She brought some towels and rubbed him dry.
Lola bent down and looked into Jimmy’s face. Her eyes seemed to ask him a question.
Jimmy wanted to tell her how he had fallen into the pond. He wanted to tell her how he had almost given up. He wanted to tell her he wasn’t sure he could do the job. But all he could do was look into her eyes.
“Jimmy,” Lola said. “Do you know why Stan and I chose you instead of one of the other shelter dogs? You’re special. We knew you weren’t perfect. But we knew you would be easy to love.”
Jimmy stopped shivering. He wiggled close to Lola and put his head on her soft blue jeans. She ran her fingers down his back. He sighed.
